AutoCAD

One of the earliest advances in engineering and architectural technology was the introduction of AutoCAD in the early 1980’s.  The advent of this computer-aided drawing (CAD) software offered a replacement for traditional drafting and allowed designers to lower product development costs and greatly shorten the design cycle.  CAD is mainly used for detailed engineering of 3D models and/or 2D drawings of physical components, but it is also used throughout the engineering process from conceptual design and layout, through production of detailed drawings and schematics.

GIS

The geography of any major engineering project can have serious implications for businesses and governments.  Choosing sites and identifying risks such as utilities and easements - all of these problems involve questions of geography.  A Geographical Information System (GIS) is a collection of computer hardware, software, and geographic data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. 

Goodbee & Associates employs GIS capabilities to:

• Create geodatabases to manage hazardous material and utility data for transportation corridors
• Create maps for analysis to identify trends, areas of potential environmental concern, and contaminants of concern.
• Create databases and maps to assist in locating and identifying utilities, and to assist in further placement of utilities.
• Create databases and maps that assist in emergency procedures and response (i.e., closest hospital, closest fire station, etc.)
• Produce maps and shapefiles for clients as a deliverable along with report.
• Convert AutoCAD and Microstation files to GIS to streamline location and availability of data.

In addition, the benefits of GIS allow us to organize data, retain data integrity, promote sharing of data with clients and regulatory agencies, and maintain data for the Client in one location.

MicroStation

MicroStation (MS) is an innovative CAD platform used by architects, engineers, contractors, and GIS professionals to integrate work on buildings, civil engineering projects, and power plants with geospatial information.

Primavera

Primavera P6 is the most powerful, robust, and easy to use solution for globally prioritizing, planning, managing and executing projects, programs and portfolios. P6 provides a real-time view of their organization’s project, program and portfolio performance. It equips managers with the right blend of usability, power and flexibility to effectively and efficiently execute on projects, and enables individuals across all levels of an organization to analyze, record, and communicate reliable information and make timely, informed decisions.

Integration of Systems

The team at Goodbee & Associates employs AutoCAD, GIS, MS and Primavera to their maximum benefits, converting data between the three packages as necessary.  In many cases, engineers are presented with data from surveyors in AutoCAD and are asked to deliver it in MS; or they receive utility GIS data that must be incorporated into MS or AutoCAD.  The integration of these three key software systems enables Goodbee & Associates to:

• Create utility maps and utility plan sets for all levels of design.
• Incorporate information from both utility companies (key utility maps) and survey information into a thorough and complete utility map.
• Create confirmed (surveyed) and unconfirmed (non-surveyed) files that can be referenced into one another to show all utilities.
• Evaluate impacts to utilities by comparing proposed construction to utility maps in MS.
• Illustrate relocations of impacted utilities.
• Show utility easements.
• Scheduling, planning and project management.
